The new school year brings a new chapter for the ASB class. Announced last week, Mr. Ortiz-Luis has stepped down as ASB director due to personal reasons. This change brings a lot of emotions from ASB officers and students alike. Senior, Derrick Thomas, a fellow member of the ASB team shares his thoughts on the whole situation with Ortiz now gone.
“It’s less fun. Everyone is not as happy as they were before because Ortiz really brought the energy up in ASB. So it’s just going to take a little bit of getting use to right now”, stated Derrick. The new teacher taking over as ASB advisor is Mr. Umlor, who has been undergoing some training to make sure that he is fully prepared to take on the responsibility of the class.
“We still have to get use to the new teacher, learning about him and seeing as we aren’t really close to him, it's just going to be really hard for everyone.”
When asked whether he sees ASB as being able to continue forward with this new change, Thomas said, “I think there is a possibility of doing that because Umlor’s a really good teacher and he knows what he’s going to do.”
However, questions continue to buzz around campus as to what Umlor’s experience with ASB has been thus far, and what his plans are for the future of ASB.
“Since taking over as ASB Director, things have been extremely busy as I try to learn as much as I can about all the responsibilities the job entails, but the students and staff have been super supportive, making the transition much easier,” Umlor stated. “I'm excited to continue all of the great things that Mr. Ortiz set up in his time as director, but I'm also excited to bring some new ideas to the table.” Umlor added “My number one goal moving forward is to make ASB the best it can be, not only for those students directly involved in the program, but for all MVHS students.“
Despite the challenging changes to the ASB in the past few weeks, it seems safe to say, students should continue to expect great things from ASB this year and shouldn’t worry about a thing!
